Senate Finance Chair Baucus Highlights Project WET in China

For immediate release: October 15, 2010

Shanghai, China—Montana's senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus applauded the water conservation education partnership between Bozeman-based Project WET and Shanghai's Jin Cai Model School. Baucus toured the school in Shanghai today* and met with some of Jin Cai's middle and elementary school students, teachers and school administrators.

"It's so terrific to see these bright young students learning the same materials students in Montana are learning about taking care of our precious water," said Baucus. "Whether you live in Shanghai or Choteau, learning about water is a critical part of being a good steward. I've always believed we owe it to our kids and grandkids to leave this place in better shape than we found it. That's why I'm so encouraged to see this partnership flourishing."

"Water conservation is something that bridges all boundaries and all cultures, and we're so thankful Senator Baucus took time to highlight this important educational partnership while in China. We look forward to continuing our work with schools around the globe to encourage young people to become informed and water-conscious leaders of tomorrow," said Project WET President and CEO Dennis Nelson.

Bozeman-based nonprofit Project WET was established in 1984 and provides worldwide outreach to teachers, community members, parents and children to promote water education. The ongoing severe drought in China left 16 million people with limited access to drinking water earlier this year. In light of this devastating situation, Project WET's focus on water conservation and the water cycle is particularly relevant.

Baucus is in China this week to meet with Chinese business and government leaders and explore ways to open new markets for Montana ranchers, farmers, manufacturers and energy leaders to trade their world-class products. More information on Baucus' meetings in China is available here.
