Learn about Oceans on World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is coming up on June 8th. Are you observing it?

Why celebrate the ocean? The two organizations that promote and coordinate World Oceans Day, the World Ocean Network and the Ocean Project, have a great list that explains some of the reasons that everyone should appreciate the ocean.

The ocean, the website reminds us:

  • Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
  • Helps feed us
  • Regulates our climate
  • Cleans the water we drink
  • Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
  • Provides limitless inspiration!

The theme for this year's World Oceans Day celebrations is "Youth: the Next Wave for Change." Project WET offers numerous resources to help youth get active in learning about and taking action to protect our oceans.

Find out how you can do your part by visiting the Discover Our Ocean page at DiscoverWater.org. Learn about unique marine creatures and their habitats, and make your own personalized Take Action! Poster to remind you how you can make an impact—even if you don't live near the shore.
