Goal
The goal of the Water and Agriculture education materials is to inform and educate young people about water’s role in agriculture, “from field to fork.”
Water plays a critical role in growing crops and raising livestock to feed a hungry and growing world, and these materials will tell that story. In addition, these materials will discuss how people in agriculture sustainably use, manage and protect water.
Preliminary list of topics includes:
- basic concepts about agriculture and the relationship among water, agriculture and the food we eat.
- plant and animal water needs (4 Rs: right amount, right quality, right time and right cost).
- concept of “field to fork” and how water is used, managed and protected through the process (growers, processors, manufacturers and retail stores).
- historical perspectives (water and agriculture throughout time).
- the marketplace (the agricultural economy).
- meeting agriculture’s water needs (low tech to high tech).
- land and water managers (best management practices).
